Hon. Jim Karygiannis

Councillor Ward 22
Scarborough-Agincourt

TORONTO – Jim Karygiannis, City Councillor for Ward 22, Scarborough-Agincourt, will be introducing a Motion at the December 13th City Council Meeting to allow individual Wards to have the choice as to whether or not to permit medical marijuana dispensaries to operate in their Ward.

“During the recent municipal election, my constituents told me that they did not want marijuana dispensaries in their neighbourhood.” said Councillor Karygiannis.  “They believe that marijuana dispensaries will negatively impact our community.”

The Ontario Provincial Government passed Bill 36, which allows municipalities to decide whether or not they would permit the sale of marijuana in their communities.  Toronto City Council will be debating whether or not the City of Toronto will permit the sale of marijuana within City limits.

“If municipalities are permitted to ‘opt out’, then Wards, which are the size of many of these municipalities, should also have that option.” stated Councillor Karygiannis.  “When it comes to dispensing marijuana, I believe that Councillors should listen to their constituents.”

The Motion will be considered at City Council on December 13, 2018.
