January 25, 2020 – Chinese New Year – 中国新年- 農曆新年

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my best wishes to members of the Canadian Chinese community on the occasion of Chinese New Year – Year of the Rat.

Chinese New Year or Spring Festival is the most important festival in the Lunar Calendar. To celebrate the occasion presents are purchased; homes are thoroughly cleaned to sweep away ill fortune and prepare the way for incoming good luck; and, homes are decorated with intricately-designed, red paper cut outs signifying happiness, wealth and longevity. Holiday customs also include fireworks displays and the giving and receiving of money in red paper envelopes (known as hongbao, or laisee).

Toronto is a proud multicultural City that embraces a wide variety of cultures and faiths.  Our City flourishes because of the diversity of people who have chosen to make Toronto their home. It is important to recognize each and every community that plays a part in enhancing Toronto’s social and cultural landscape.

As the Newcomer’s Advocate with the City of Toronto I strongly believe that we must work to together to promote togetherness. We must Respect our newcomer communities. We must Accept our newcomer communities. We should Celebrate our diversity and Embrace our different cultures and traditions, because we are all part of the human RACE.

As you gather together to honour the centuries-old traditions of this festival, may health and prosperity be yours in the coming year. The New Year is a time of great hope, a time to look forward to the future and to follow new dreams.

May I take this opportunity to wish you and your family a Happy and Prosperous Chinese New Year! Kung Hei Fat Choy! Gong Xi Fa Cai!

     中国农历新年又称春节，是农历中最重要的节日。庆祝新年，人民购买礼物，大扫除房屋除旧迎新，张贴珲春、春联，代表着幸福、财富和长寿，享受传统食品和美食。节日习俗包括烟花汇演和给予红包。

    多伦多是一个令人自豪的多元文化城市,包括各种各样的文化和信仰。我们的城市之所以繁荣, 是因为多元化的人们选择以多伦多为他们的家。最重要的是互相赏识，及每一个社团均增强着多伦多社会文化景观。

    作为多伦多城市新移民的倡导者，我坚信，我们必须共同努力,促进团结。我们必须尊重我们的新移民社团。我们必须接受我们的新移民社团。我们应该赞美我们的多元化及接受不同的文化和传统, 因为我们都是人。

    当你们一起庆祝这个历史悠久的传统节日时，愿你们身体健康、新年进步。新年新希望，展望未来，放飞梦想。
